The Secret to a Successful RecRe Box? "Inventory Location Alignment"
When we first started RecRe, the idea was simple. We wanted “Citi Bike” but for basketballs in public parks. That early spark led us to build something much bigger… a nationwide platform that gives college students self-service access to the gear they need, right where they need it.
Today, RecRe powers everything from basketball rentals at the rec center, to calculators in academic buildings, to vacuums in residence halls. And behind all of it is one key principle that drives our entire approach: inventory location alignment.
What is Inventory Location Alignment?
It’s the idea that success comes when the right inventory is placed in the right spot. It means putting the item exactly where the student needs it, in the exact moment they’re likely to use it.
Not near it. Not across campus. Not behind a hard-to-find desk. Right there.
This approach is what makes RecRe work so well. We’re not just a box with gear inside. We’re a tool that turns underutilized space into a high-impact student service. When location and inventory align, convenience goes up, engagement increases, and administrators gain accountability without adding staffing demands.
Here are a few campuses getting it exactly right.
Oakland University – Game Gear in the Grizz Den
At Oakland’s student union, there’s a game lounge called the Grizz Den. Think billiards, air hockey, esports. Instead of asking students to walk around the building or go upstairs to borrow gear, the RecRe box is placed right inside the space.
It’s easy. It’s accessible. And it’s working. Usage is up, and the lounge stays active and welcoming. This is what happens when the gear lives where it gets used.

University of Southern Mississippi– Gear at the Edge of Spirit Park
Southern Miss placed a RecRe box on the outside wall of their student union, steps from Spirit Park. Inside is outdoor engagement gear—baseball gloves, Bluetooth speakers, spikeball kits, and more.
Students can grab what they need for pickup games or hangouts. And they don’t need to check in with a staff member or wait for business hours. The data shows that students are using this gear all day and late into the night. That’s the value of great alignment.

Auburn University – Iron in the Laundry Room
Auburn has nine RecRe boxes, and nearly all of them are great examples of smart inventory placement. But one really stands out. Inside a residence hall laundry room, there’s a RecRe box filled with lifestyle gear—including an iron and ironing board.
This is the definition of meeting a need at the perfect time. No extra trip, no added steps. Just exactly what a student needs, where they already are.

George Washington University – Urban Campus, Smart Access
GW’s campus is in the heart of downtown DC. Students often need to carry things long distances, up elevators, and across busy sidewalks. One of their most-used items? A collapsible cart.
It’s not flashy, but it’s incredibly useful. Whether it’s groceries, a picnic setup, or moving supplies, these carts help students manage urban life. We’ve heard similar feedback from campuses in Boston, New York, and Chicago.

Point Loma Nazarene – Snorkels by the Pacific
Point Loma’s RecRe box sits near the cliffs of the Pacific Ocean. Their team filled it with adventure gear like snorkel sets and camping supplies. It’s a great example of a school using its natural surroundings to inspire what goes inside the box.
They also charge a small rental fee for premium items. This helps them cover costs without needing to keep staff on duty around the clock. It’s not about making a profit. It’s about offering gear in a smart, sustainable way.

Why This Works
Inventory location alignment is simple. But it has a huge impact. When you get it right, you create:
- Better student experiences
- Higher usage and engagement
- Lower staffing requirements
- Smarter use of campus space
RecRe is inventory agnostic. You choose the gear. We help make sure it’s placed where it matters most. That’s what makes RecRe boxes work, on campuses of all sizes, in all types of environments.
If you’re already using RecRe and want to optimize your box locations, or if you’re just curious about how this could work for your campus, we would love to talk.
Let’s put the right gear in the right place. And let’s make it easy for students to say yes to using it.
